7 Barrhill Terrace, Cumnock


7 Barrhill Terrace is on the left of the image

In 1905 the proprietor of 7 Barrhill Terrace was Thomas Miller, joiner, 13 Springvale Avenue, Saltcoats. The house was unoccupied and Thomas Miller was advertising in various newspapers that it was to let or buy. 

The McVitties, widow Elizabeth Boa and family, moved in. In 1891 the family were living in Greenmill House, Ayr Road, Cumnock and father John was an ironstone drawer. John died in January 1901 at Barrhill Road and the family were still in Barrhill Road when the 1901 census was taken on 31 March. The Valuation Roll shows that 7 Barrhill Terrace was unoccupied in 1906/1907.so they must have moved in after that. Their daughter Mary Jane died in November 1907 at the Western Infirmary, Glasgow, her usual residence given as 7 Barrhill Terrace. Her brother James died there in 1910. Two other sons were Presbyterian ministers and they emigrated to Australia. Elizabeth followed and in 1916 she was living at the Manse, Rozelle, New South Wales. She died in 1923 at Manly, New South Wales, Australia.

The next family to occupy 7 Barrhill Terrace was the Montgomerie family. George Howatson Montgomerie was a flesher (butcher) with the Lugar Store. He was born in Ochiltree where his father was a shepherd in Bent Farm. In 1901 the family was living in Lugar and by the 1911 census George, retired by this time, his wife Jane and daughter Janet, a teacher, had moved into 7 Barrhill Terrace. The Valuation Rolls show his daughter Jane was the proprietor/occupant and George was the tenant/occupant. George died there in 1933. Daughter Janet lived at 7 Barrhill Terrace until her death in 1963. According to the 1930 and 1940 Valuation Rolls  Janet also owned land at 11 Barrhill Terrace.
