In 1905 the proprietor of 5 Barrhill Terrace was Thomas Miller, joiner, who also owned houses Nos. 6, 7,and 8. His tenant/occupier was John Hume, a solicitor and son of a schoolmaster, who previously lived with his parents in the Schoolhouse in Lugar. After his marriage to Elizabeth Drysdale Smith in 1905 they moved into 5 Barrhill Terrace. John was a joint agent (manager) with the late Archibald Brakenridge, solicitors, Royal Bank, Cumnock branch. He was Session Clerk for the established Church and a violinist with the Cumnock Orchestra. John and Elizabeth went on to have five children. When John died in 1923 at Barrhill Terrace the streets were lined with mourners. The funeral cortege was led by the Auchinleck Pipe Band and the ceremony at Old Cumnock New Cemetery was masonic, performed by Lodge St. Barnabas. After his death his son William inherited the house and Elizabeth D Smith, his mother, was his tenant.

By 1935 the new owner was the Royal Bank of Scotland, their tenant being John Craig who was also their joint agent (manager). John Lambie Craig was the son of Thomas Craig, grain merchant, Smallburn, Muirkirk. His parents died in 1927 and 1942 respectively in Beechview, Bank Road, Cumnock. John married Helen Peden Smith in 1930 in Cumnock. He died in 1968 at 18 Barrhill Road, Cumnock. On the 1940 valuation Roll this house was named Peden Thorn. John Craig retired in 1954 so would have to move out of his 'tied' house and was living at 18 Barrhill Road in 1955 when he was the informant on his sister Margaret's death certificate.
