1 & 2 Barrhill Terrace

Barrhill Terrace is situated at the top left-hand side of the Barrhill Road. Originally there were ten houses. The 1905 Valuation Roll records them as Barrhill Road. 

The proprietors of the cottage at 1 Barrhill Terrace  were the McCubbin family who were well-known to Cumnockians. For many years they had a grocer's shop on the corner of Glaisnock Street and Townhead Street. William McCubbin was born in Kirkmichael, Dumfriesshire and came to Cumnock to work with John Samson & Son, grocers.  On the 1871 census we find him lodging with Mary Johnston in Waterside Place  Her father was William McGeachin, a grocer and ironmonger, whose business was also in The Square. William McCubbin eventually took a lease of premises purchased by William McGeachin and went into business for himself. 

In 1874 William McCubbin married Catherine (Kate) McKnight Reid from the well-known family of masons in Townhead Street. Initially they lived in Rosebank Cottage, 42 Barrhill Road, before moving to Barrhill Terrace. The 1885 Valuation Roll shows William McCubbin as proprietor/tenant in Rosebank Cottage and in 1895, although Rosebank Cottage is still owned by William, it now has a tenant, James Hodge. So, they seem to have moved into Barrhill Terrace between 1885 and 1895. They named their house Glenview. After the deaths of William and Kate their family continued to live there. Their unmarried daughter Margaret died in a Glasgow Nursing Home in 1940 her usual address being Barrhill Terrace.

William McCubbin, grocer, Cumnock died 17/6/1918 at Cumnock testate. Conf. granted to Catherine McKnight Reid or McCubbin, Glenview, Barrhill Road, Cumnock, his widow executrix.
